What inspired The Blood Race series?

The idea that we are powerful. That we have so, so much inside of us - and we don’t even realize it. We have unlimited potential inside of us. We are the anomalies, the creators and protectors of earth: whether we realize it or not, we are making tomorrow. We are creating every moment of every day, and we have the power to realize that and use it to bring the world inside of us to life. It changes everything.

What would you say is the number one theme of the Series?

The Blood Race and the two books that follow are stories about waking up. About searching for identity; who we truly are. For me the theme is really a question: who are we? Who are we really? Haven’t we all asked this question? Or haven’t we heard faint whispers of it each time we look into the mirror - each time we gaze into our own eyes and seem to peer past that darkness into a mystery deeper and more mystifying than we could possibly comprehend? For me, the series is about this mystery.

What would you say drives the characters in The Blood Race?

Hawk, Ion, Fin, and the rest of the students within the Dimension - every character in the series really, they each share a hunger: a longing we all feel inside of us. That there is something more, something else. That feeling that swells inside of us when we see the ocean, or when we gaze up into the stars, there’s something going on...so much more than we realize. I think C.S. Lewis put it well when he said:

“If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.”

...and what if that world is actually inside of us - waiting to be unleashed? What if it flows through our veins? What if we create that world?

What this story means and why it matters to you...in your own words?

It means that there is a mystery. There is meaning and purpose, and not just for some but for all. It means that there is a great an encompassing love inside and around us. It means that there is so much power inside of us - so much potential for good and beauty. It means that everything...absolutely everything is possible.

What’s one thing writing this series has taught you?

To dream.

To ask.

To leave more room for wonder.

To embrace the mystery.

To believe.
